Snoop Dogg’s Son Recruited By UCLA

How do you avoid the pitfall of failing to live up to your father’s success? One good way is to strike your own path. And it probably helps if you’re a gifted athlete too.

Cordell Broadus, the son of Snoop Dogg, has decided to play college football at UCLA, the city rival of his father’s team, USC. Broadus will play in front of far larger crowds than his father is used to: UCLA’s crowds in 2013 averaged 70,285.

Snoop immediately said he had changed allegiances: “I’m going to back him up 1,000% so I’m going to throw my USC drawers away,” he said. “I’m going UCLA 100,000%.”

Broadus is a wide receiver and according to Rivals.com “he’s a good route runner, he has good speed and athleticism and if you throw the ball up, he’s got very long arms and good hands. But he doesn’t deliver all the time.”

“I just felt like that was the best place for me,” Broadus said. “I have a great connection with the coaches and I want to play in front of my family out on the field and get a great degree.”

Snoop said his son was attending college to get an education first, and play football second. “UCLA just presented the best platform for him that we thought as a family that was going to look out for him when his career was over with,” Snoop said. “And that’s what’s important, to make sure he gets a degree and gets an education. Football is not going to be there forever, but life is, so you’ve got to make sure that you prepare for life.”

Broadus isn’t the first son of a hip-hop artist to play football at UCLA. Justin Combs, the son of P Diddy, won a football scholarship in 2012. At the time, many questioned whether a man with an estimated wealth of $450m should accept a scholarship for his son.
