Nike’s classic Cortez has been a staple in sneaker culture for decades and while the shoe has a loyal following, it’s overall popularity has wavered up and down over the years. With the recent re-release and near instant sellout of the Nike Cortez OG colorway – made famous by the movie Forrest Gump – along with our own Russ Bengtson’s recent article about it, the shoe is back on the radar of many sneakerheads and becoming one of the more coveted silhouettes for the upcoming season.
Building on its resurgence, Nike recently released a “Gym Red” iteration of its classic. And while many of you might make an immediate connection with a certain LA street gang, we shouldn’t look at this release as more than Nike continuing to ride the “Red” wave.
