Welcome to the 21st century. Women have free speech, raise families and almost have equal pay with men. We have complete control over our bodies and according to She-conomy- we control 85% of the consumer market. With all of this semi newfound power, it’s perplexing why some women let themselves be degraded by ignorant rappers.
You read that right? We let ourselves be degraded. Buying the single, following the “artist” on social media and ignoring the fact that they are insulting you, your mom and your sisters are all supportive acts of varying degrees. Women being the most supportive of our counterparts – even when it’s not reciprocated.
So why do we continue to support the public humiliation? Because it’s the only thing we know how to do and it’s popular? Women have been taught and expected to keep the foundation together for years. We make excuses, ignore and sweep disrespectful behavior under the rug all in the name of being a “strong woman” and “supporting our men”. *Insert eye roll
If you’re a female millennial and you’ve ever said any of the following statements, you are a part of the problem: “I’m not a *insert expletive, so he’s not talking about me”, “It’s a fun song, no one is taking it seriously” or “If it makes you mad, don’t listen to it”. Time to do better girls. It’s time to stop supporting the nonsense and start demanding the respect that we’ve all worked for. It’s time to stop thinking that someone else will fix the problem when it is a collective effort. I -for one- don’t want my daughter growing up thinking it is okay for a man to call her a derogatory name because he has a nice car or a million Twitter followers. Let’s do better!
